Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week

NYC

September 5th – 13th, 2012

The leaves on the trees might be beginning to turn colors and drop, and stores might be beginning to stock an abundance of coats, scarves, and sweaters, but it’s fashion week in NYC right now and all the fashion world is already looking towards the warm and sunny days of 2013.

The runways have been full of interesting trends this time around, and spring of 2013 looks to be packed tight with light and airy layers, sophisticated-but-ultra-lounge-worthy silks, and daring plunges and drapes. Some of the hot trends from 2012 will still be around (color blocking, brocades, lots of bright orange, mixes of neons with neutrals, leather for everyday wear, and short suits with prints), but there will be plenty of new things to try, too. There were sleek harnesses wrapped around feminine dresses at Jason Wu, a simple and muted palette of only black, white, tan, and yellow at Tibi, ballerina-inspired silhouettes from Christian Siriano, and slight aquatic-sci-fi-meets-medieval-embellishments at Rodarte and Monique Lhullier.

Emerging trends for S/S2013: sheer layers, harnesses, orange & gray, ultra rich florals, sporty-chic, bare midriffs, loungewear-luxe

But the most notable trend so far has been a splash of sporty-chic. Many collections have had an undeniably athletic air, as if the wearer could happily skip off for a grueling tennis match at any second. Skirts were short and flippy at Victoria Beckham and Rag and Bone, models wore dresses with baseball caps at J Crew and DKNY, Diane von Furstenberg worked a racerback shape into many of her dresses and tops, and Reed Krakoff seemed to sample baseball-tee colorblocking in a few of his pieces, too. Gym rats will really rejoice: there were lots of bare midriffs at Marc Jacobs, Peter Som, Jason Wu, Rachel Comey, and Richard Chai Love. Game on?

Below are some of my favorite looks from fashion week so far–my top 5 favorite picks from every show. I did this post mostly for myself, as I find that it’s a great way to keep visually focused and organized when it comes to fashion, but I thought I would post it up here as well, for anyone else that is interested. I will be adding more as the shows go on, so stay tuned.  And of course–what runway show has been YOUR favorite so far? Share in the comments!
