(In Review + Outfit Of The Yesterday) Ann Taylor Side Zip Poncho + Buttoned Up Boiled Wool Cape, Fall 2014 Collection
Just a quick review on two items I picked up recently at Ann Taylor: the Buttoned Up Boiled Wool Cape and the Side Zip Poncho.
As a petite person, I have always shied away from ponchos. They usually don’t come in petite-friendly sizes (one size fits ALL OF NOPE DIDN’T THINK SO, darnit), and they tend to look blanket-like even on the most svelte of figures and shapes.
Yet like most people I love a good challenge, even if it is of the incredibly frivolous variety, and I was lured in by Ann Taylor’s Size Zip Poncho (currently on sale + take an extra 75% off with code “FALLSALE”, limited time only!). It came in petite sizing (yay!) and has two zippers on each side, making it easy a poncho/cape hybrid. The zippers are also gold, which is another bonus–I personally love any combination of black and gold and have lots of it in my closet, meaning this poncho will go with almost anything.
The poncho is super soft and fits a little large, but the sizing is pretty lenient considering ponchos are meant to be ponchos and not fitted sweaters. I tried it on in both the petite xx-small and petite x-small and liked both; I took it home in the petite xx-small simply because I felt like there was less fabric around the neck and bust area. I have a really short neck and turtlenecks usually aren’t very flattering on me, but this poncho has a slight cowl shape and isn’t nearly so suffocating or constricting. It even got a thumbs up from my husband, a staunch anti-poncho supporter.
And on to the Buttoned-Up Boiled Wool Cape (take 20% off with code “ANNWELCOME11”, limited time only!). What can I say about this gorgeous coat except holy moly–it’s gorgeous. I’m a sucker for any sort of cape, but just like ponchos they can be a challenge for petites to wear.
Not this one, however. Boiled wool usually conjures up images of stiff, terrible, scratchy fabric but this coat is soft and stretchy–and it moves well with the body. It has two pieces (the front and the back) held together with a detachable tie belt, meaning you can remove the belt it comes with an easily swap in one of your favorites. And because it has two pieces held together by a belt, it’s also incredibly easy to move in.
And it’s beautiful! I actually can’t wait for the temperatures to drop a bit more so I can wear it all the time. And as someone who hates cold weather, I can’t believe I just typed that sentence out, but there you have it–this coat is making me look forward to the depressing doldrums of December. It runs true to size–I’m wearing it below in a petite xx-small (but consider sizing up one size if you want to layer bulky sweaters underneath!).
(PS – the sunglasses I’m wearing below are rose gold aviators with turquoise mirrored lenses – and just $10! Love them.)
